KRS-One & Buckshot - "Survival SKills"

Posted by admin in Things You Should Check Out , Music Business , Good For Hip-Hop , East Coast , Album Reviews

Truly a hip-hop classic.  "The Teacher", KRS-One and the Orginal "BDI" Buckshot, really do their thing with this album.  Packed with tight Production, tight rhymes and great collabos, this is the stuff that made East Coast Hip-Hop EAST COAST HIP HOP.  Survival Skills Executive Producer duties are held down by Buckshot and Dru Ha, (the Duck Down Records exec who brought you, Smif-N-Wessun, The Fab 5 and Helter Skelter), and distributed by E1 (aka Koch Records).  Track and Producer listing coming soon.

Things You Should Check Out: Raekwon's Video for "House of Daggers"

Posted by admin in Things You Should Check Out , Good For Hip-Hop , East Coast

In this age of bulls**t videos, it's always good for the hip-hop soul when a video comes out that is actually creative...and thus I give you Raekwon The Chef's video for "House of Flying Daggers" (feat. Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, Method Man & GZA). This video is SO Wu Tang, visually different and creative. Production credits go to the late J Dilla, whose work I really enjoy and have much respect for, although this is not one of my favorite Dilla tracks. Enjoy.

Creating Custom Drum Kits for Your Tracks (the Super Kits Tutorial)

Posted by admin in Production Tips , Home Recording , Home Production

When creating tracks be it on the ASR or any other sampler for that matter, you will at some point need to either sample drum sounds or load sounds that you have previously sampled.  Whether you're the type of producer that creates your drum patterns first or whether you start with a loop or melody first, you will still need to either sample or load drum sounds.  If you've been doing this for a long time (as I have) you will soon learn that it is rather annoying to have to stop your creative flow to sample your drum sounds on the go.  That's why about 10 years ago, I had the bright idea to start making my own libraries of drum sounds.  I had records and CD's of the old school R&B songs that my parents grew up on, and I remember when Rubber Chicken first started selling sounds for the ASR-10...and no dis to them, but their drum sounds were weak (at least back then) for Hip-Hop.  So, I decided to make my own library so I wouldn't have to break my creative flow to sample (and get the attacks just right, decay, etc.).  This was the birth of the so called "Super Kit"; an ASR instrument with a Hip-Hop quality drum sound on every available key in the keyboard.  This Tutorial will show you how to maximize the use of the Super Kits library to enhance your creative workflow.

The Illusive "Big Sound" in Home Music Production By Ermias Kebede

Posted by admin in Production Tips , Production , Mixing , Home Recording , Home Production

It is clear that booking studio time and spending hourly fee's to record your music is pretty much a thing of the past. Thanks to technology musicians can, with minimum recording equipment and relatively very little money produce great sounding recordings from the comfort of their bedroom studio's. However, to make your bedroom studio production sound like it was recorded in a big studio and have that "big sound" is till a tricky endeavor that requires attention. Here are some basic tricks that can help you towards that goal.

Getting the Best Performance From Your Artist by Richard Dolmat

Posted by admin in Recording

So now you've decided to record your songs. Good for you, except that you will need people to play the instruments for which your music calls for. If you can play all the instruments on your own, then all the better. You will have less people to argue with! Other wise, you will have to hire (read: bribe with beer/food/hockey tickets) session musicians and vocalists to play and sing for you, putting you in the producer's chair.
Your songs are only as emotional as the performers who play them. It goes without saying that you should hire the best performers your budget will allow. But if $100/hour for a professional vocalist is a little steep, here are a few ways to help encourage the best from your session players.

Establishing Your Mix by Richard Dolmat

Posted by admin in Mixing

Now that you've spent hours and days and weeks and months recording your musical masterpieces (and you've also read my article "Tips for a Great Recording Session"), you have arrived at my favorite time in the studio; The Mixdown. But don't think your job is done yet! The mixdown is just as important as recording. As an artist, you have to approach the mixdown from an artist's point of view and stay on the

Tips for a Great Recording Session by Richard Dolmat

Posted by admin in Recording

You know your songs are great (and so does your girl/boyfriend, family, pets etc), and you finally decided to record an album in a real studio. That's great! But what actually happens when you get there?
When you finally do pick the perfect studio, one that you feel comfortable at, there is a certain routine that must be followed in order to get the best performance and the best recording for your budget.

Internet Distribution: The Future of Entertainment. by Daniel Punch

Posted by admin in Music Business

A friend and I were having a discussion recently. I asked him what he thought the next method of distribution for films and music would be. My thoughts were that we would have to come up with some new method that was convenient, sturdy and didn't involve compression (as CDs and DVDs do, thereby limiting the picture and sound quality, although not very much). He simply said that it wasn't going to happen; in the future it's all going to be distributed on the Internet.
